The Art of it All:
A WebQuest for Middle School Art Classes

Designed by
Molly Gienger and Amber Grantham

Target Learners:

This project should be targeted to Middle School or High School students who have knowledge or interest in presentation skills, internet search skills, and art.

Notes for Teaching Unit:

This project should be done in groups of two or three based on different aspects of art (such as sculpture, artists, or time periods). The teacher should hand out a list of art interersts and have the students circle the two or three that they like the most. The teacher would then assign groups based on the interests of the students. The students will be given two weeks to complete the assignment, with three class days given to work in groups. The teacher could explain the project by giving examples of past presentations and their grades. The teacher could even give his/her own example of what he/she would have done if assigned the project. The teacher could review the WebQuest process with the students on the first day. The first day of the second week, the teacher should take time out of class to answer any questions or help any groups who are behind. The teacher will have the students create a timeline of what they plan to accomplish in the two week time period.

Goals:

  • Increase knowledge of arts and their histories, including time periods, artists, and mediums.
  • Increase computer skills through internet searches, and typing skills.
  • Helps students to use their imaginiation and creativity when designing a presentation.
  • Public speaking skills are increased by giving the presentation orally in front of the classroom. This should also help build self-esteem and confidence.
